Introduction
Open Briefing's five-day advanced first aid course is built around an enhanced version of the highly-regarded Level 3 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (FREC 3). It is designed specifically for humanitarians, field workers and other NGO staff. It is also suitable for security advisers working with aid workers and other NGO staff. The course focuses on more-advanced emergency interventions and the longer-term management of a casualty in remote locations. As such, it is ideal for those working in remote or hostile areas, where the risk of life-threatening injuries is heightened and where medical evacuation could take considerable time to arrange.
Course content
The course is a mix of taught theory, practical demonstrations and realistic casualty scenarios in the purpose-built indoor simulation centre and at a nearby outdoor training area. Although this course includes classroom sessions, the focus is on scenario-based training, which provides students with genuine experiential learning by immersing them in the training and provides important opportunities for feedback and reflection. The scenarios are all based on real-life events, and are developed specifically for the students attending the training and the environments that they will be working in. The purpose-built indoor simulation centre features realistic mock-ups of medical and trauma emergencies, and incorporates lighting, smoke and sound to create unique immersive scenarios.
The course covers:
- Medical and trauma emergencies
- Catastrophic bleeding
- Airway management
- Basic life support
- Defibrillation
