A 1-day desk-based course run by Arup on using bamboo appropriately for construction in humanitarian and developmental contexts. The course will be interactive, with a mixture of lecture-style, individual and group exercises.

The course will cover:

  • Introduction to bamboo and common myths.
  • Advantages and disadvantages of bamboo, and where it can be used most appropriately.
  • Traditional construction methods.
  • Methods of designing to resist fire, floods, earthquakes and winds.
  • Traditional and modern connections.
  • Durability of bamboo against insects and rot.
  • Efficacy of traditional and modern preservation methods.
  • Case studies of temporary, transitional and permanent bamboo shelters from around the world.

The course is aimed at anyone working practically in humanitarian or developmental contexts. The course is particularly suited to those with experience in construction such as engineers and architects, however all are invited to attend, including students.
