Aims and contents

The Summer School aims at providing students, researchers, NGO workers, lawyers, CSR experts and other public- and private-sector practitioners with a comprehensive overview and knowledge of the legal mechanisms and tools applicable in the field of business and human rights keeping up with current relevant developments at the national, regional and international level.

The rise of contemporary economic globalisation has changed the traditional view on the duties of businesses, leading to an intense international debate abouth their global role and their human rights responsibilities. The Summer School will provide the participants with up-to-date insights into such debate, by analyzing in depth the content and implications of the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the process of their implementation at national and international level, and the ongoing discussion at the Human Rights Council of an International Treaty on Business and Human Rights.

In line with the polycentric structure of the UN Guiding Principles, the Summer School is organized around three Modules concerning, respectively, the State duty to protect human rights (I), the corporate responsibility to respect human rights (II) and the victims’ access to remedy (III).

The Business and Human Rights Summer School will provide the participants with an understanding of the main challenges concerning the connection between business activities and human rights, with particular attention to some crucial issues: the role and obligations of States; the recent and emerging human rights-related legislation regulating corporate activities worldwide; the access to effective remedies for victims of corporate-related human rights abuses. The Summer School will provide participants with up-to-date insights into the business and human rights international framework from a variety of legal, regulatory, and policy perspectives. A specific focus will be afforded to the content and impact of the 2011 UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, to the process of their implementation at national and international level, as well as to the ongoing negotiations on the International Treaty on Business and Human Rights.

Teaching methods

Lecture-style instruction will be compounded by interactive classes and use of role-plays. All classes will be taught in English.

Certificate

Participants who have attended at least 80% of the classes will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Participants who have fulfilled the same attendance requirement and successfully taken the optional multiple-choice test, will receive a Final Certificate containing the number of credits obtained.
